Festival of Harvest | Diwali
Yes, Diwali is a harvest festival. The last harvest before the arrival of winter is celebrated through this festival.
From ancient time onwards India was an agricultural economy hence people would take the blessings of goddess Lakshmi before closing their accounting books and they would also pray for the coming years.
Many businesses in India close old files and start new entries from this day making it the beginning of new financial year.
People believe that Goddess Lakshmi roam around on this day waiting for people to invite her to their house thus people keep their windows and doors open as a sign of welcoming her to their house.
The whole house is decorated with earthen oil lamps and rangoli (a geometric pattern or design made with rice, colored powders etc.) is made at the entrance of the house.
Lord Ganesha is also worshiped along with Goddess Lakshmi. Many mouthwatering savory food and sweets are also made.
